Capabilities and limitationsTurn selected pages into separate files
Split PDF is designed for a document whose pages need to become individual PDFs. It is useful for separating one-page certificates, individual scans or a set of independently shareable notices. Each selected page becomes its own result. If you want several selected pages together in one new document, Extract pages is the more appropriate tool.
Before splitting, determine whether each page makes sense on its own. A page may depend on a preceding heading, a footnote or a continuation on the next page. Separating a multi-page invoice into isolated files can make it harder to understand rather than easier to manage. Check the intended recipient’s requirements and choose the document boundaries deliberately.
Select the pages and create results
- Open the source PDF and inspect its physical page count.
- Enter the pages or ranges to split, using the preview to confirm their positions.
- Review the output naming options so the files remain recognisable.
- Create the results and inspect the list of individual PDFs.
- Download files separately or use the ZIP option for the complete set.
Physical page positions are not always the same as printed page numbers. A cover and contents page can make printed page “1” the third page in the PDF. Use the preview when selecting a range. A reversed range also deserves review: an intentional order in the workspace should not be confused with the original reading sequence.
Check both the file count and the content
Count the selected pages and compare that number with the results. Open several outputs, including the first and last, and confirm that each contains the expected single page. For a small batch, inspect every file. A correct result count does not prove that you selected the right pages, so compare content as well as filenames.
If you download a ZIP, open the archive and verify its contents before forwarding it. Some recipients cannot conveniently use archives on a phone or a managed device. Individual PDF downloads may be better for a small set, while a ZIP keeps a larger batch together. Choose based on the recipient’s workflow, not just the convenience of one download button.
Splitting is a page-organisation operation. It is not sanitization or redaction. A page may still contain visible personal information or embedded content that needs separate review. If each output is intended for a different person, take particular care not to send the complete ZIP to every recipient. The packaging choice can create a disclosure mistake even when every individual PDF is correct.
Preserve useful context and naming
Keep the source document separately and use a consistent basename with a page-related suffix. Avoid names that contain sensitive data unnecessarily. If the page itself includes a printed identifier, verify that it matches any identifier you add manually to the filename. A file named for the wrong person can be misrouted even if its contents are intact.
For formal records, consider whether the full document must remain available as evidence. A single extracted page may omit qualifications or signatures elsewhere in the original. Describe the output as a page from the source rather than implying it is a complete record. Read the local file workflow for mobile downloads and the metadata guide before distributing separated records.
Frequently asked questions
Does this make one PDF per page?
Yes. Each selected page becomes an individual PDF. Use Extract pages to keep several selected pages together.
Can I download all results at once?
Yes, multiple results can be downloaded as a ZIP. Open the archive to verify the files before sharing it.
Are printed page numbers changed?
No. They remain visible page content. Selection uses physical PDF page positions, which may differ from those printed labels.
Is splitting a way to remove metadata?
No. Use the dedicated sanitization workflow and verify its scope when hidden information matters.
Is the original deleted?
No. The tool produces new files. Keep the original if the separated pages may need their full context later.
