Repair PDF uses qpdf locally to rebuild recoverable cross-reference and structural problems. It is useful when a PDF has enough intact content to be reconstructed but a reader struggles with its internal organisation. It cannot recreate bytes that were never downloaded or recover every page from a severely damaged file.
Keep the original damaged file and obtain a fresh copy from the source if possible. A truncated download may be better solved by downloading again than by attempting repair. Confirm that the file is actually a PDF rather than an error page or another format with a renamed extension. Repair should be a controlled recovery attempt, not an assumption that every failure is fixable.
Run a recovery attempt on a copy
- Select the problematic PDF from your device.
- Review any available preview or error information.
- Create the repair result and download it if processing succeeds.
- Open the saved output in a capable reader.
- Compare page count and meaningful content with any trustworthy source reference.
If repair fails, note the error and avoid repeatedly overwriting derivatives. A file can be too incomplete to reconstruct. Ask the sender for a new export or use the original authoring source where available. Password protection is a different issue: use the correct password through an authorised workflow rather than expecting structural repair to bypass encryption.
Opening successfully is not complete recovery
A repaired document may open while still missing images, fonts or pages that were damaged in the source. Inspect the first and last pages, section boundaries, tables and graphics. Read important values rather than judging only whether the viewer stops displaying an error. A clean-looking first page is weak evidence about the rest of the file.
Compare with an expected page count or a previous trustworthy version if one exists. Check whether any pages are blank unexpectedly. Test text selection and relevant interactive behaviour separately. Structural recovery does not guarantee that form fields, bookmarks, attachments or other complex features are intact.
For a formal record, document that the file was repaired and retain the original. Do not describe a recovered derivative as the untouched source. If certificate signatures are involved, independent validation is especially important: rewriting structure can affect evidence even when visible pages appear unchanged.
Distinguish corruption from compatibility
Some files open in one reader but not another because of unsupported features or reader bugs rather than recoverable structural damage. Test an up-to-date compatible reader when appropriate. If the source application can export a simpler PDF, that may be a better solution than repeatedly rewriting an unusual file.
A scanned page that looks blurry is not structurally corrupt merely because its text is unreadable. Repair does not sharpen missing detail or correct OCR. Likewise, a PDF that copies text in the wrong order may need extraction review rather than structural recovery. Choose the tool that matches the actual symptom.
After repair, perform any later transformation on a separate working copy and verify the final result again. Read comparing PDF versions to support content review and PDF reading order when the file opens but its extracted text is confusing. A useful recovery is one whose remaining limitations are understood, not one that merely produces a new filename.
